21 March 2021: A Profile of Elise Stefanik

Stefanik vs. Cuomo: While governor faces scandals, north country congresswoman leads public drive against him

This article presents a profile of U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who has provided strong, consistent leadership against Governor Cuomo's deadly COVID policies in New York. That's especially true for the Cuomo administration's nursing home scandals, where she has kept pressure on Team Cuomo from the beginning of the pandemic and where we think history vindicates her efforts. This article describes how she worked to keep attention on the Governor's deadly scandal as the mainstream news media instead sought to advance its "Cuomo the Hero" narrative:

The north country congresswoman, a staunch Republican born and raised in Albany, has blasted the governor, a scion of an old-school New York Democratic political dynasty, on every platform she's able to access. Fox News, The New York Post, Twitter, Facebook, everywhere you turn, Rep. Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, can be found calling Gov. Cuomo "the worst governor in America."...

Rep. Stefanik has consistently criticized Gov. Cuomo on the state's handling of nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic as well. Since March of last year, she has repeatedly said the governor's directive that state nursing homes take in COVID-positive senior patients, and not test patients before admitting them, was misguided and wrong.

The article provides a longer discussion of Stefanik's role in opposing Cuomo administration policies, beyond its COVID nursing home policies. Should Governor Cuomo be forced from office, whether through resignation or impeachment, her role in contributing that outcome by putting irresistible pressure on those who would otherwise seek to keep Cuomo in power should not be underappreciated.
