- Republicans press for Assembly impeachment investigation into Cuomo to move quicker
-
The New York Assembly's impeachment probe is considered by many observers to be something of a 'sham'. Those ranks include the members of at least one minority party in the Assembly, who note the probe managed by the majority Democrats is dragging out without any evidence of progress toward reaching any findings.
The Assembly impeachment investigation into the numerous allegations facing Governor Andrew Cuomo was launched two months ago on March 11.
Since then, the Assembly Judiciary Committee, which is leading the impeachment investigation, has met two times, but without another meeting scheduled, Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay pressed the committee to move “expeditiously.”
In a statement he wrote, “We are getting closer to a point where the Committee on Judiciary’s responsibilities will be rendered obsolete by investigations being carried out by the state attorney general and multiple federal agencies.”
The Assembly's impeachment probe of Governor Cuomo's scandals has largely been designed to fail by Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx), through a failure to control the scope of its investigations. But that's not its only built-in-by-design failure mode:
The Assembly’s impeachment investigation is by far the broadest; however there has been doubt cast on its legitimacy since the law firm hired to assist has close ties to Cuomo.
For their part, the Assembly Republicans are seeking to force the issue by calling for a straightforward impeachment vote in the Assembly. Since a majority of Democratic party members in the Assembly have already called for Governor Cuomo resignation, which he has refused, their failure to follow through in setting an impeachment vote indicates blatant hypocrisy on their part.
